Secondhand Trade Tracker
Version 1.0
Selling what you already own has become an industry of its own. This tracker follows how much changes hands on the big resale platforms and how much of each sale the platform keeps. Every figure comes from a company's own filing or results release, and each one links to it.

How much of each sale the platform keeps
- eBay, revenue as a share of goods sold
- The RealReal, take rate as it reports it
- Vinted, revenue as a share of goods traded
eBay's line is its total revenue over the value of goods sold on it, so ads and other fees count along with its commissions. The RealReal reports its own take rate: its share of each consigned sale after discounts and returns. Vinted's line is its revenue over goods traded, from the rounded figures in its results release.

Gross merchandise volume: the total buyers paid for goods on the platform. Vinted reports in euros, so its figures here are converted to dollars at each year's average exchange rate. eBay's count includes new goods, and eBay does not publish how much of it is secondhand. Its figures start in 2021, the year it changed how it counts. Depop starts in 2022, its first full year under Etsy, and eBay bought it on July 30, 2026.

Active buyers at the end of each year: everyone who paid for at least one purchase in the twelve months before. Each company counts its own way, and a person with two accounts can count twice. Depop's count starts in 2023, the first year Etsy published it. ThredUp's 2021 and 2022 are left out for Remix, as with its orders. Vinted publishes no buyer count.

Orders placed on each platform
| Series | 2019 | 2020 | 2021 | 2022 | 2023 | 2024 | 2025 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| The RealReal | 2.22M | 2.23M | 2.98M | 3.76M | 3.3M | 3.36M | 3.59M |
| ThredUp | 3.13M | 3.97M | – | – | 4.88M | 4.85M | 6.08M |
Only The RealReal and ThredUp publish how many orders their buyers place. An order can hold more than one item. ThredUp's 2021 and 2022 counts include Remix, its European business, which carried a large share of its orders, so those two years are left out. From 2023 on, ThredUp's count is its US business only.

How the tracker works
The Illus Caden reads each figure off its source and enters it here. Public companies' figures come from the earnings releases and annual reports they file with the SEC. Vinted is private, so its figures come from the results it publishes itself.
Vinted reports in euros. This page converts each year at that year's average exchange rate from the Federal Reserve, so a dollar figure here matches the year it was earned in. The euro figures and the rates are in the Every figure table.
A platform's cut is the share of what buyers paid that the platform keeps. Where a company publishes its own take rate, this page uses it. Where it does not, the page divides revenue by goods traded and says so.
Companies report about four times a year, so the page changes when they file. Full years make the charts. The latest quarter sits beside them in the tables and the headline figures, marked with its quarter.
What this tracker cannot see yet
- Facebook Marketplace, Craigslist, OfferUp and yard sales, where much of the casual selling happens. None of them publish what changes hands, so every total here is a floor.
- Poshmark and Whatnot. Both are private, and Poshmark stopped filing when Naver bought it in 2023.
- How many orders go through eBay, Depop and Vinted. None of the three publish an order count, and Vinted publishes no buyer count either.
- Mercari's US marketplace. Mercari reports it in its Tokyo filings, and those figures are not on this page yet.
- The size of the whole US secondhand clothing market. ThredUp's yearly Resale Report estimates it with GlobalData, but its 2025 total was not published in a form this page can cite.

First version: goods traded and the platform's cut at five resale platforms, from their own filings and results, with US used-merchandise stores from the Census Bureau.
