Self-storage is where things go once the house runs out of room. This tracker follows what Americans pay to keep them there and how full the units stay, year by year. Every figure comes from a federal survey or a company's own filing, and each one links to it.

What Americans pay self-storage businesses each year
Revenue of every US self-storage business with employees. Through 2022 it comes from the Census Bureau's Service Annual Survey. From 2023 it comes from the survey that replaced it, the Annual Integrated Economic Survey, shown with striped bars. The two surveys are built differently and Census publishes no year on both, so read the step from 2022 to 2023 with care: part of it may be the change of survey.

Self-storage locations with paid staff
County Business Patterns counts a location once it has paid employees. A facility run from another office does not show up on its own, so read this as a floor for the number of facilities.

- Public Storage, average share of space rented

Each company reports this its own way. Public Storage gives the average across the year, while Extra Space Storage and CubeSmart give the share rented on December 31. Each value is the one first reported, for the stores the company had owned long enough to compare that year.

Counted at December 31 each year. Extra Space Storage is the only one of the three that publishes how many units it rents out. Extra Space's counts include stores it manages for other owners. Public Storage and CubeSmart count only what is on their own books. Extra Space's jump in 2023 is its purchase of Life Storage.

How the tracker works
The Illus Caden reads each figure off its source and enters it here. Company figures come from the earnings releases and annual reports each company files with the SEC. Industry figures come from the Census Bureau.
Companies report about four times a year, so the page changes when they file. Full years make the charts. The latest quarter sits beside them in the tables and the headline figures, marked with its quarter.
Census figures run a year or more behind. Company figures arrive within weeks of a quarter's end, so they carry the story past the Census years.
What this tracker cannot see yet
- A clean line across 2022 and 2023 for industry revenue. The Census Bureau changed surveys between those years and has not published either year on both.
- The share of households renting a unit. The Self Storage Association surveys it, but two published reports of its 2024 number disagree (12.6% and 13.4%), and the study itself is behind a paywall.
- Private operators. Independent owners and private funds file nothing public, so the three companies here are only part of the market.
